BACK PAIN

Causes of Back Pain: Back pain is very common and can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Muscle, tendon or ligament strain or spasm
  • Poor posture: prolonged sitting, slouching, or poor sleeping positions, poor posture while standing or walking can lead to chronic back pain due to muscle spasm and tendon tension.
  • Herniated or bulging discs: the discs between vertebrae in the spine can herniate or bulge, causing compression of nearby nerves and leading to radiating pain.
  • Arthritis: conditions like osteoarthritis (spondylosis) or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the spine, leading to pain, stiffness and inflammation.
  • Skeletal irregularities: conditions like scoliosis (an abnormal curvature of spine) can lead to chronic back pain.
  • Injuries and accidents: falls, sports injuries, and accidents can lead to fractures, sprains or injuries in the back muscles, tendons or bones.
  • Lifestyle factors: faulty food habits, faulty living practices, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, emotional stress can lead to build up of inflammation in the body. This chronic inflammation leads to degenerative changes in the cartilages and intervertebral discs and in various body organs contributing to back pain by weakening muscles and reducing circulation to the spine.

SYMPTOMS

PIVD/Slip-Disc

PIVD/Slip-Disc is the most common form of Cervical/Lumbar problems. It may worsen with time.

PRIMARY CAUSES OF PIVD

Faulty diet

Pollution

Faulty Living

Heredity

Persistent Stress

Age

The ability of cartilage to heal decreases as a person gets older

SECONDARY CAUSES OF PIVD

Injuries

Heavy Weight Lifting

STAGES OF PIVD (SLIP-DISC)

STAGE 1

Disc degeneration: chemical changes associated with aging causes discs to weaken, without herniation.

STAGE 2

Protrusion: when nuclear material causes bulging of outmost annular fibres (prolapsed disc).

STAGE 3

Extrusion: the nuclear material emerges through the annular fibres, but the posterior longitudinal ligament remains intact.

STAGE 3

Sequestration: the nuclear material emerges through the annular fibres and the posterior longitudinal ligament is disrupted.

THE MANAGEMENT OF SLIP DISC IS BASED ON THE HOLISTIC PRINCIPLE

According to the holistic principle of management

  • Body heals itself
  • Tissues respond to detoxification, de-congestion, activation, alkalization & optimum nutrition
  • Chronic muscle spasm and tendon tension can be released, thus Spinal curvature is restored.
  • Spinal decompression leads to retraction of bulged disc.
  • Co-ordination & balance in different groups of muscles supporting the spine can be re-established.

OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of Arthritis.

Knee Joint Osteo-Arthritis is a degenerative condition characterized by breakdown of cartilage and changes in the underlying bone. It is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people around the world, often called wear-and-tear arthritis. Osteo-Arthritis gradually worsens with time, and no cure exists. Treatments can slow the progression of the disease, relieve pain and improve joint function.

The usual complaints are knee pain, joint stiffness, grating sensation, decreased range of motion in the knee and swelling. Symptoms often worsen with activity and improve with rest.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

Pain in the knee joints during or after movements is the most common symptom

The joint maybe painful to touch

Loss of Flexibility- inability to move your joints through its full range of motion

Grating Sensation- You may hear or feel a grating sensation when you use the joints

Bone Spur- Extra bits of bone, lump, may get formed around the affected Joints

Gait changes- patients have a limping gait or a waddling (duck like) gait in advanced stages of knee osteoarthritis

Joint stiffness- joints feel stiff usually while getting out of bed in the morning

Bowing of legs is the most common sign

Flat foot, inversion of feet, ankle instability are other signs elicited by the doctor

CAUSES OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

PRIMARY CAUSES

Faulty Diet

Excessive consumption of sugary snacks, fast food and refined grains; inadequate intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats; consuming excessive amounts of added sodium; a poor ratio of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that does not support optimal health; inadequate water intake which is essential for overall health.

Faulty Living

Lack of exercise, lack of good sleep, lack of routine are major stressers that allow accumulation of cellular inflammation in the body.

Persistent Stress

Chronic stress that may arise from various life situations such as work pressure, financial difficulties, relationship problems or health issues. Persistent stress lingers and can affect both mental and physical health. It can lead to headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, weakened immune function. It increases the risk of anxiety and depression. It may cause changes in appetite, sleep disturbances and social withdrawal.

Pollution

Environmental conditions and pollutants interact with each other and together promote a chain of events giving rise to disease or disorder.

Heredity

Heredity has been an important factor.

Age

The ability of cartilage to heal decreases as a person gets older making them prone to develop knee osteoarthritis

Gender

women above 55 years are more likely to develop OA of knee compared to men of same age group.

SECONDARY CAUSES

Injuries

Sports Injuries

Heavy Weight Lifting

Repetitive Stress Injuries

STAGES OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

STAGE 1

X ray knee shows a very minor spur growth

Person may or may not experience any pain or discomfort

STAGE 2

Considered a mild stage

X-ray reveals greater spur growth

Cartilage generally remains healthy

Space between the bone is normal

Synovial fluid is present at sufficient level for normal joint motion

STAGE 3

Obvious damage of cartilage

Narrowing of joint space

Pain while walking, running, bending or kneeling

Joint stiffness after prolong sitting & morning stiffness

STAGE 4

This stage is considered “Severe”

Patient experiences great pain while moving or walking.

HOLISTIC PRINCIPLE

The Principle

Chronic tendon tension, ligaments around hip, knee & ankle joint can be released

Chronic spasm of the muscles can also be released

Bones forming the joints re-align, rotate & space is corrected or widened

Incoordination & Imbalance in different groups of muscles supporting the joints can be corrected

Body heals itself under favorable conditions.

Tissues respond to detoxification, de-congestion, activation, alkalization and

Optimum nutrition

HOLISTIC TREATMENT
